Preparing plants for the cold season

A blooming garden is the centrepiece of every hobby gardener. But especially when the days get shorter and the nights colder, plants need special care. The first step towards a winter-proof garden is to cut back the plants. During this process, faded perennials, roses and shrubs in particular should be targeted. Pruning strengthens the plants and allows them to sprout vigorously again in spring. Frost protection is also an essential element for overwintering. Sensitive plants and potted plants should therefore be kept in a sheltered place.

The lawn also needs special attention now. It is advisable to mow it one last time before winter and remove the leaves. The leaves and grass cuttings can be easily composted in our MonAmi. The compost becomes valuable humus for the garden in spring.

Recycling garden waste

The recycling of garden waste also plays a decisive role in preparing the garden for autumn and winter. The Biohort composter offers several advantages in this respect.

Inside, the sophisticated ventilation system of the Biohort composter enables an optimal rotting process. The supply of fresh air is an important factor in composting, as it promotes the decomposition process of the organic materials. This ensures that high-quality compost is produced from the garden waste.

The filling volume of 725 litres also enables the composting of large quantities of garden waste. The Biohort composter is not only extremely practical, but also very easy to use. A particular advantage is the well thought-out design with a front wall that can be pulled up, which makes it easy to empty. The contents can therefore be removed effortlessly without having to bend down.

The Biohort composter is also equipped with a rodent guard made of fibreglass fabric. This protects the compost heap from uninvited guests and ensures that the valuable compost can mature undisturbed. This means that nobody has to worry if the compost heap is infested by rodents.

Fertilising the lawn

Fertilising provides the lawn with the necessary nutrients for the cold season and strengthens its resilience. However, a certain amount of background knowledge is also required here.

The correct dosage is important when fertilising. Over-fertilising can damage the lawn and possibly burn it. You should therefore always adhere to the manufacturer's recommended amount and distribute the fertiliser evenly.

Furthermore, the fertiliser should only be applied to a dry lawn and then watered in. This ensures that the fertiliser penetrates to the roots and can take effect.

The last fertilisation should take place around four weeks before the first frost so that the lawn has enough time to absorb and process the nutrients. If fertiliser is applied too late in the year, there is a risk that the lawn will no longer go into winter dormancy and will therefore be more susceptible to disease and frost damage.

With these fertilisation tips, the lawn will be optimally prepared for winter and will show its best side in spring.

The Biohort equipment locker is the ideal solution for the safe and dry storage of the tightly closed lawn fertiliser and other garden utensils.

Winterising the pool

It is advisable that pool owners also keep an eye on the necessary winter preparations. To do this, the skimmer should be cleaned and the water level lowered if necessary. A pool cover protects the pool from falling leaves and dirt.

The Biohort HighBoard proves to be particularly useful when it comes to winterising the pool. With its elegant design and robust, weatherproof construction, it is perfect for storing pool accessories safely and neatly. Whether it's skimmers, tightly closed care products or pool vacuum cleaners - the HighBoard has room for everything.

The main highlight of the HighBoard is its user-friendly design. The double doors make it easy to store large or bulky items. The lid with gas springs is also a particular plus point. It allows quick access from above and guarantees that everything is always to hand.

The well thought-out accessories that our HighBoard has to offer are particularly worth emphasising. For example, there are tool holders for the inside of the doors. This allows you to make optimum use of additional space and store smaller items neatly. The HighBoard is not only a functional storage space, but also a real eye-catcher. Thanks to its modern design and elegant colours, it blends seamlessly into any garden ambience. Thanks to its robust construction, it is also extremely durable and hard-wearing.

Winter care for patios and balconies

Before the cold season begins, patios and balconies should also be considered. These areas of the property are often neglected when it comes to preparing for winter. Yet they are the areas that are most exposed to the elements.

Wooden decking and railings in particular require special attention. Examination, repair and care are the order of the day!

Damaged areas on wooden floorboards - especially cracks or splits - could become larger in winter due to moisture and frost. Such areas should therefore be thoroughly inspected before winter and repaired if necessary. This may mean replacing individual boards or sealing cracks with suitable material.

After the repair, a special wood protection varnish can be applied. This protects the wood from further weathering and helps to keep the decking area looking good for longer. A stable and well-maintained railing is particularly important in winter, when slippery or damp surfaces can become a slip hazard.

These preventative measures increase the lifespan of the patio or balcony and you can look forward to a carefree outdoor season next year.

Organisation and winter storage: making the most of storage space

Furniture made from materials such as wood or rattan can suffer from the weather and its longevity can be affected. It is therefore important to store them protected from rain, snow and frost. But where to put all the furniture, cushions and decorative elements if there is not enough space in the house or cellar?

The integrated ventilation ensures that the stored items are always well ventilated and that moisture or musty odours are avoided as far as possible.

If the humidity is particularly high during the winter months, it is advisable to store cushions and pillows in a dry interior to avoid mould stains.

The lid made of robust aluminium is not only durable, but also enables easy and safe opening and closing thanks to the integration of a convenient gas spring.

In terms of the security of the stored items, the LoungeBox impresses with a turn knob cylinder lock, which protects the contents from unauthorised access.

Store garden tools and furniture

The last item on the checklist: Garden tools and furniture should be cleaned after the work is done and then stowed away.

Proper storage in winter is crucial to prevent damage from frost and moisture. This is where the garden sheds from Biohort are a valuable aid. They are weatherproof and rustproof thanks to the durable metal. This not only provides optimum protection for furniture and equipment, but also helps to prevent mould from forming as far as possible.

Thanks to the clever interior fittings of the Biohort garden sheds, which include shelves and tool holders, the available space is optimally utilised. This means that every piece of furniture and every garden tool has its place.

Particularly practical: unlike wooden sheds, Biohort metal sheds never need to be painted and retain their attractive appearance despite the winter conditions.

Winter poses particular challenges for the garden. But with the right tips and high-quality products from Biohort, preparing for the cold months is child's play. Knowing that everything is safely and properly stored gives you a good feeling and makes the start of spring much easier. So you can look forward to the approaching winter with peace of mind and look forward to a colourful spring awakening.
